A stable government, with proper leadership and an even distribution of power, is essential in order to establish a fair nation that guarantees and promotes basic human rights, economic opportunity and a multitude of freedoms. Unfortunately, the people of The Democratic Republic of Congo have suffered through an extensive period of political unrest. Much of this political unrest can be attributed to ongoing government corruption and loosely enforced laws, which have ultimately hindered the success and development of the nation. While the nation has the natural resources that could allow for economic development, the trade of these resources has resulted in mass conflict instead of economic growth. For example, the trade of minerals, including copper and diamond, is controlled by the rebel militia. This has only promoted violence and has depleted government revenue. Even though the Democratic Republic of Congo has seen an 8 percent increase in their annual average industrial growth since 2012, the nation’s world ranking is still economically repressed.
